"Only 53% of American adults believe capitalism is better than socialism."(source)

Also: "Adults under 30 are essentially evenly divided: 37% prefer capitalism, 33% socialism, and 30% are undecided"

Unrelatedly, Jenny Holzer is on twitter - perhaps the one celebrity who should be. [don't know who Jenny Holzer is? Read her inflammatory essays]. Now we just need to get Abdal-Hakim Murad on there too, and the thing starts to have a purpose.

Judging by LJ, what American mean by 'socialism' is quite different to what most English people might mean. I get the impression that quite a few Americans think that all European countries are socialist.

Danger!

Similarly, 80% of Americans do not believe that socialism offers any improvement over capitalism.

37% undecided is a lot.

yes, but I had imagined the number of socialists in the USA as being comfortably under 10%. [also, it's 27% undecided, not 37%]. To put this in context, they have (since 2007) one senator who calls himself a 'socialist' (whose election was a bit of a shock to the system), and the Democratic Party carefully avoid the label.

Actually, if you click through to the details, you get a thinko that makes them look entertainingly pravda-esque:
53% Capitalism
20% Capitalism
27% Not sure
